Great start to Senior Football Season
Full Time Áth Troim 2-19 Na Fianna 0-3
Congratulations to Tadhg Foley, Ruairí McCaffrey and Darragh McLoughlin on their adult debuts
A warm welcome back to James Cullen to the red and white after spending the last three years away in Brisbane.
Trim impressed in their first competitive match on Saturday last (7th February) with a comprehensive 2-19 to 0-3 win over Na Fianna in the first round of the Feis Cup in Trim. While Trim looked very impressive their opposition never really got into this game and were outclassed in every sector for the full 60 minutes scoring only one point in the dying minutes of the first half and two late points in the second.
Trim in contrast showed they were up for the challenge from the throw in with a number of attacks and scored their first point in the fourth minute when Sean Foley opened his account. By the tenth minute they were five points clear with further points from Foley, Eoin O’Connor and David Lernihan ( a fine 2 pointer) following a foul on Josh Harris.
Trim were in the ascendancy and Eoin O’Connor added to the Na Fianna woes with a great goal following a Daire Lynch shot and Conor Quigley increased the lead with a great two pointer after great defensive work and a fast move into attack.
Despite almost total dominance over the next twelve minutes neither side scored but Trim were rock solid in defence and had several missed chances due to some over-elaboration and an alert Na Fianna goalkeeper. Eoin O’Connor, Sean Foley and Conor Quigley finished Trim’s scoring with points to a solitary point from Na Fianna in the 27th minute.
Half Time Áth Troim 1-9 Na Fianna 0-01
The second half proved to be more of the same with Caoimhín O’Neill, Eoin O’Connor, Evan Collins and James Cullen adding single points, Conor Quigley added two points, David Lernihan had two two pointers and the highlight of the game was a brilliantly taken goal from Cathal O’Reilly in the 29th minute. He found himself at the end of a well worked movement and blasted the ball to the top of the night giving the goalkeeper no chance at all.
This was a good display by Trim. The defence was awesome. It was well organised and the tackling was fierce but fair. Evidence of this was the fact that Na Fianna got no frees within scoring distance of the Trim goals. Anything that passed the backs was well dealt with by Eoin O’Reilly in goals. David Lernihan and Conor Quigley dominated midfield and created many fine passing movements which resulted in Trim scores.
The movement in the forwards was exceptional with Eoin O’Connor and Sean Foley creating acres of space for themselves and the other four forwards working hard to win ball and distribute it to them.
All round a fine display but there will be tougher assignments in the weeks ahead not least when we meet the same opposition in the first round of the Championship.
